Greek Glossary:

Active: a fully initiated member of the fraternity/sorority you who is affiliated with a campus chapter.

Alumna: a graduated member of the women sorority/fraternity (Plural is alumnae).

Alumnus: a graduated member of a men's fraternity (plural is alumni).

Associate Member: a person who has excepted a bed but is not yet initiated into a sorority or fraternity he. See also "New Member".

Badge: the badge of in initiated member is received during the initiation ceremony and worn in a designated location.

Bid: an invitation to join a sorority or fraternity.

Big: nickname for a big sister or brother, a mentor assigned to a new member. Many organizations have special names for these pairings.

Brother: a term used by fraternity members to refer to one another.

Brotherhood: the common term for the bond between members of the same fraternity.

Chapter: a membership unit of a national or international sorority or fraternity he used to describe the collegiate group of the fraternity or sorority.

Charter: the official document drafted by the international/national fraternity or sorority you that allows for the creation of a local chapter that is affiliated with a college or university campus.

"Class", "New Member Class" or "Pledge Class": a term used to name all new members who joined during the same semester.

Colony: a term used to describe the collegiate group of the fraternity or sorority in a new organization on campus.

Crest: insignia used by sorority and fraternity members. Most Greek organizations reserve the crest for initiated members only. Each crest has multiple meanings behind it.

Founders Day: an event celebrated by fraternities and sororities to highlight the founding of their organization and celebrate its history.

Greeks: members of a fraternity or sorority you. The term Greek is used because a majority of fraternities and sororities use Greek letters to distinguish themselves.

Initiation: a ceremony during which new members receive lifelong membership privileges into the organization they have chosen to be a part of. A traditional, secret ceremony.

Legacy: each organization has its own definition of a "legacy". It is generally defined as an immediate family member of been initiated member, such as a sister/brother or daughter/son. Some organizations also recognize extended family members as legacies as well.

Neophyte: A newly initiated member of a cultural Greek organization; also referred to as a "Neo".

New Member: "a person who has excepted a bed but is not yet initiated into a sorority or fraternity.

New Member Educator: A liaison between the new members and the chapter, responsible for implementing and monitoring the new member program and preparing the new members for initiation.

Philanthropy: a community service and/or fundraising project sponsored by a chapter.

Potential New Member: a person who is interested in joining a Greek-letter Organization and will participate in a rush, intake, or recruitment; often abbreviated to PNM.

Recruitment: refers to the process by which IFC and PHC chapters select new members.

Ritual: The internationally/nationally endorsed traditional, secret ceremonies of a fraternity or sorority.

Sister: a term used by sorority members to refer to one another.

Sisterhood: the common term for the bond between members of the same sorority.

Stepping: an elaborate performance involving dance, marching and traditional culture of an organization.

Stroll: a line dance done by members of cultural Greek organizations.
